African Fashion Futures Vol.1

On the 16th of September, all roads led to Stuart Cinema. There, Melanin Unscripted, in collaboration with Offshore Agency, united tastemakers in African storytelling to commence the inaugural edition of our event titled African Fashion Futures.

Over the last few years, the African fashion landscape has grown significantly in terms of innovation, cultural impact, and revenue (which, according to Statista, is expected to hit $47bn by 2024). Where there had been little to no events celebrating African fashion and culture through trailblazing films, African Fashion Futures sought to fill the gap.

The result was an evening closing out New York Fashion Week starring films from across the continent and diaspora. Filmmakers highlighted were Kuukua Eshun (Ghanaian-American), Amarachi Nwosu (Nigerian-American), Sunny Dolat (Kenyan), Anthony Prince (Jamaican-America), Gouled Ahmed (Somalian), Asmaa Jama (Somalian), Noel Kasyoka (Kenyan), and Silva (Kenyan). The evening also included an after party with sounds from DJ Yb, Jessicunt, and MGSP.

Here’s a quick look at highlights from the event:
